Buddha on a bicycle

May 12, 2017

A few weeks ago, on a Thursday, I started my journey towards Wandsworth where I teach a weekly Flow + Meditation class. It wasn’t a particularly special day, until something unexpected happened. Here an account of a yogi's (not always very Zen-like) mind.

[Breathe in] Just hangin’ out with my good old bicycle, my trusted steel horse for many years.

[Breathe out] I do have to be careful today as I forgot my helmet at Wandsworth after yesterday’s class!

[Breathe in] Note to self: Be aware of any traffic coming from any side, be it bicycle or bus. Today is not a day for accidents!

[Breathe out] Sies, don’t be a fool today; stop in front of every red traffic light. Do not tempt the Goddesses.

[Breathe in] Let’s just be aware and mindful during this trip.

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe… Hey look! A cat! "Here kitty…"

[Breathe in] Oh wait no, come back to breathing Sies. Breathe in…

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out] Oh, for Foxes sake! Ánother red traffic light?! Should I just….? NO! Wait. Be patient. Just,

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Oh dear, this bike is quite heavy when going uphill. Maybe I should get a new…

[Breathe out] Stop it!

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] It wouldn’t be such a bad idea to get a new, lighter and faster bike, would it?

[Breathe in] Argh! You’re the worst! Come back to your breathing and stop the pondering and the wanting. Be aware of your breath, the surroundings, the traffic. Today is NOT a good day for accidents. Just…

[Breathe in] Breathe.. Oh hey, Marsha is in at Eve & Grace! “Hi Marsha!(Waves)

[Breathe out] [Sighs] She’s such a nice lady.

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in the fumes of this frikkin’ congestion (Slightly wheezing)

[Breathe out] They should really do something about these diesel buses. It’s disgusting!

[Breathe in] Breathe in through scarf

[Breathe in] Oh Whole Foods. Note to self: Get organic dog treats for Lise on the way back.

[Breathe out] Ah finally, downhill!

[Breathe in] Breathe in…Oh whatever! It’s busy here, just focus on the busses and cars!

[Breathe out] At the bottom of that hill there’s the traffic light where all the pedestrians walk through a red light while you come rolling down.

[Breathe in] Wooooooooooooo-

[Breathe out] hoooooooooooh!

[Breathe in] Yes, green light! I have just about enough speed to make it to the top of the next hill!

[Breathe out] GET OUTTA MY WAY, BEASTS ON TWO LEGS! OBEY YOUR TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND LET ME PASS! (Rings bell like a maniac)

[Breathe in] Nice, that went well.

[Breathe out] Now, finding my way through the congestion uphill. Let’s just go around the stationary busses.

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in] What the…"*^$%&*$"!!! (Slams into a door from a vehicle of which the driver decided to stop in the middle of a driving lane and let his passengers out)

[Breathe out] Argh! (Gasps and subsequently slams body and face into the stationary bus on the left side, with face pressed against the glass and realises that for the passenger of the bus on the other side, it must look like a Jim Carrey/slapstick film)

[Breathe in] Shock

[Breathe out] Shock

[Breathe in] I’m in shock.

[Breathe out] I’m stuck, I can’t get out!

[Breathe in] Please help!

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in](Passenger of car helps to get the bike which seems to be intertwined with limbs of the body while car drives away)

[Breathe out] Have to…

[Breathe in] Walk to pavement.

[Breathe out] Have to…

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in (Starts hyperventilating and crying at the same time)

[Breathe out] Don’t hyperventilate, take deep and slow breaths.

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in – You’re just a bit shocked. Everything is fine, just

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe… Oh Goddess, I’m so lucky. I’m not even wearing my helmet!

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Keep your head cool. Have Passenger note down his contact details.

[Breathe out] Check bicycle. Check clothes and limbs.

[Breathe in] Head still attached?

[Breathe out] Head still attached.

[Breathe in] Now calm down. Let the tears just flow. You are O.K.

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out] (Passenger continuously asks whether I’m okay and jots down his contact details)

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in (Passenger said he’s sorry he didn’t check properly before opening his door, but that I shouldn’t have been overtaking on the inside. Too shocked to respond accordingly.)

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Breathe in

[Breathe out] Breathe out

[Breathe in] Need to make a move again. Need to teach soon.

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out] ...

[Breathe in] Wow, that was close…

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in] Breathe… Wait what?! Overtaking on the inside?!

[Breathe out] He shouldn’t have gotten out of the car on a driving lane. I was on the outside of the bus!

[Breathe in] *^$(*^%$(*#^!!!

[Breathe out] AAAARGH! Nasty little humans!

[Breathe in] The nerves!

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out]

[Breathe in] Okay, be calm again. You must focus. No time to get into this mess of who was to blame.

[Breathe out] …

[Breathe in]

[Breathe out] He was! He could have broken my neck!

[Breathe in] I’m lucky I wasn’t on a racing bike. Otherwise I would have gone over the door!

[Breathe out] Or worse, catapulted in front of a driving bus!

[Breathe in] Lucky indeed.

[Breathe out] Maybe there is something to my rickety, old iron steed.

[Breathe in] Perhaps…
